Sharp continues to make some of the best cashregister on the market today IF YOU BUY THE RIGHT ONES! Sharp makes two lines of cash registers. They make the XE line up which are sold through the big box stores like office depot, costco etc. beware of those machines they are not high quality and you will get zero support. If you bought one take it back and then buy a commercial grade machine from the ER or UP line which are only sold through dealers with a support staff.

Often we are asked about wireless Kitchen Printers and if we reccomend any of them. Our answer used to be no but we have now tested and started selling a bluetooth adapter that works great with SAM4s Cash Registers and Kitchen Printers. We have not yet tested them on any Sharp Cash Registers but I don't see why they would not work as well as the SAM4s registers do.

The cost is about $250.00 for the adapters plus the cost of the printers. Sometimes this is less then the cost of installing cable in a difficult situtaion.

Sharp Cash Registers and Electronic Journal

The Electronic Journal (EJ) have replaced traditional journal or audit tape found in traditional cash registers. The way the EJ works is that it stores the transactions in memory instead of printing them on the internal audit tape like older Sharp Cash Registers.

This has nothing to to with your sales report. The old journal tapes and now EJ's are an AUDIT tape or record not a sales report. Even if you new cash register has an EJ you will still get your traditional X and Z reports (sales reports)

With the old school audit tapes when you had a balancing issue or massive over ring to resolve you would open the printer cover and start going through the printed audit tape or journal tape (same thing) until you spotted the problem. The EJ works in a similar way other then it prints to memory as you go rather then paper. So when you need to look into the audit tape to resolve an issue you have to print out the EJ and look at it. After it is printed it it exactly like the traditional audit/journal tape. Some registers allow you to print portions of the EJ to the screen of the register (if it has a screen) instead of printing it out.

There is one HUGE difference between between an old school physical audit tape and an EJ. A physical tape is limited by the size of the roll but when at and end the register in most cases prompts the user to change the paper. We the EJ has limits by the amount of memory in the cash register and it adjusted by programming in most cases. An EJ is sized by number of lines. So for an example a single item sale is about 7 lines (depending on the make and model of the cash register) you would have a line for date and time a line for register # Transaction # Cashier#, a line for the item and price, line for subtotal, line for sales tax, line for total, maybe a line for amount tendered and another for change. So a 2 item sale would be about 8 lines. So most registers when the EJ limit is reached the machine will start overwriting the oldest entries of the EJ. Some machines can be prompted to warn the cashier and prompt if the EJ should be printed, some machines have an option of stopping the cashier and forcing the cashier to print the EJ.

I recommend taking your Z every end of day and if the Z is good ignore your EJ and let it overwrite! But think about it before you start using your register. With some registers once you allocate that memory you may not be able to alter it without making changes you may not want to make in the rest of you program.

No one think I can tell you for sure is no one can tell you how long an EJ will last etc cause it all depends on the amount of items, number of sales etc! Every business is different. Your Sharp Cash Register Expert can help you more

I know all techie and does not seem to be a big help. Big point was the A330 can have the 2nd drawer the A320 can not. The chart says the A320 does not have a logo stamp but I think it does.

The A320 and the A330 both use the IR-90/91 ink roller and 44mm bond paper NOT THERMAL. These machines are numeric only no alpha printing. Both have good metal drawers with hard plastic removeable tills. Both machines are heavy duty and taken care of I see them last 5+ years all the time no reason to not be able to get 10 years out of some of them in the right location and well taken care of.

Many people don't know nor probably never cared to know but Sharp markets two lines of Cash Registers. However I wish more people knew and would take this into mind before buying a Sharp XE piece of junk!

Sharp makes a line of consumer grade Cash Registers that all the model numbers start with the letters XE. The XE line is sold via mass merchandisers like Office Depot, Costco, Staples etc. NOT CASH REGISTER DEALERS. Please keep in mind you get what you pay for. When you pay $125.00 for a Cash Register why would you expect the employees there to know anything about it? They don't care however in most cases they will allow you to return it!

Then Sharp makes a commercial Grade of cash registers and those models numbers start with ER, or UP and these registers are only sold through Cash Register Dealers and will cost more however we dealers can help you with the registers, program the registers and repair them if needed. YES you will pay more for educated professional cash register people and companies!

I don't think Sharp ever had any intention of having people fix a XE cash register. They sell for $100.00 to $300.00 MSRP and even though I can buy parts for them every time I look up a price for a XE owner I ended up getting yelled at for trying to rip them off! SORRY WE RUN A BUSINESS HERE not a charity to fix crap for free. Here is the problem take for example someone wants an insert for their XE cash register and I look up the part and it is $110.00 MY COST sometimes as much as the silly machine cost in the first place. So I mark it up and tell the consumer the cost and they bite my head off! So needless to say I don't even bother to cost out parts for the XE lines any longer!!!!! Please keep in mind I have never sold an XE and we don't sell them!!!!! If you want your XE fixed then call Sharp! However I warn you after hearing form hundreds of angry XE owners your will get no where calling Sharp! But I guess Sharp makes enough to make it worth the while and the hard feeling cause they don't seem to be slowing down at all!

Buy a Commercial Grade Sharp Register not an XE. If you do buy an XE then now you know what you are getting into and if the XE does not last 2 years you have been warned but also you did not pay much to begin with!

The IR-90/91 ink roller works in many Sharp cash registers and is still available through several on-line retailers. These ink roller is the work horse of the heavy duty drum sytle printers. We get this question about Sharp Cash Registers all the time. The answer is both yes and no. If you have a good commercial grade Sharp cash register then chances are you could install a Datacap Twin Tran to it and turn your register into a credit card terminal too. If you Sharp Cash Register has the letter XE in the Model Number that NO there is nothing you can do.

When you install a Datacap on a Commercial Sharp Cash Register it makes credit card transactions much more secure, faster, and with fewer errors. The Datacap may also your cash register to accept your own private label Gift Card program which is Money in the Bank in my book!

At this time I’m only aware of one product that allow cash registers to become credit card terminals and that is the Datacap devices. If someone tells you your cash register can interface to a standalone credit card terminal they do not know what they are talking about.

Should you go with a Cash Register or POS System

So congratulations, you are about to open a new business and are facing hundreds if not thousands of decisions that need to be made quickly.

So let me help on this one. Should you use a cash register or POS system? Well lets get a few things out of the way first. Rather POS or Cash Register the first job of either of these is still security, second is efficiency.

Another big factor in this decision is whether your business will be owner operator or will you rely on managers and other employees? If owner operator a cash register will often make more sense then an expensive POS system. You are there all the time, you are running the cash register so why not use a simple register!

However owner operator or not, if you plan on keeping a real inventory, tracking in and out and what should be on the shelf, do not try and use a cash register. If someone tells you a cash register can do this, well technically they are correct, realistically they are DEAD WRONG! If they are telling you that, it is not real world, it is theory! How do I know, well it has been our family business for 30+ years! We have seen everything tried! And tried a few ourselves until we got tired of hitting our heads against the same brick wall. So to summarize YES a cash register and software combo is capable of inventory control, but would you choose a hot air balloon to travel across the country or a commercial Jumbo Jet? Both will get there, but only one is efficient!

Be real with yourself about keeping inventory or not. Yes it is possible, yes it is a good practice, yes it takes 10+ hours a week if not more for most small stores! We have had thousands of small stores as customers of the years and we have seen it all. Most of these thousands did not keep a live inventory, and a handful did! We have had successful customers from both schools of thought! Bottom line here is be real with yourself. PC based or Register Based inventory takes time each and every day or week, a computer does not equal magic!

Myself I would do an inventory system if possible but again IF POSSIBLE! If you decide on an inventory control system first buy a computer/software based POS/Inventory control system like Keystroke, or RMS for retail, or Digital Dining if a restaurant. Next step you will need to set aside 20 to 40 hours of your time to plan your work and work your plan. YOU WILL NOT INSTITUTE AN INVENTORY CONTROL PROGRAM DURING THE COURSE OF BUSINESS!
Do yourself and your loved one a favor and carve out the time to do it before you are in the trenches of the retail or restaurant battle!

OK inventory is not for you, you just want to ring up sales by category and have the register compute tax and change and a daily report of what you sold right. Should this be the case with you opt for a commercial grade cash register like those from Sharp or SAM4s. Using a cash register does not mean you can't have security or good record keeping because you can. Should you decide on going home or heaven forbid go on vacation make sure you are following some basic security principles found in all decent commercial grade cash registers. Yes Cash Registers can integrate with your own private label Gift Cards. Now that does not mean every Gift Card company out there, but it can be done.

Don't however confuse that with the idea that every Cash Register can accept integrated Gift Cards. First of all it must be a commercial grade cash register with a serial port that can interface to a Datacap Credit Card Modem (designed just for cash registers and POS) So if you are thinking you can do this with a cheap cash register from a big box store you will be disappointed, however that does not mean you need to spend a fortune either. Cash Registers capable of Integrated Gift Card and Credit Card start at about $299.00 and up but are going to come from a commercial grade cash register dealer, not the office supply store or discount warehouse!

One Credit Card and Gift Card company specializes in Cash Register Interfaces. That company is Mercury Payment Systems and they offer a FREE Gift Card program when you use them for Credit Card. You still pay for the plastic cards but no discount or transaction fee!

Plastic Gift Cards systems are so much more secure then the standard old paper gift certificate. Even if someone stole your entire stock of cards they are useless until activated through your cash register and of course after they are activated you would have a paper trail. There are many other reasons to use a Plastic Gift Card system.

Cash Register Ink Ribbons and Ink Rollers

Although most modern cash registers use thermal paper and don't require an ink ribbon or roller there are a few that still do. One of the hardest to find is the IR-90/91 Ink Roller. The IR-90/91 is the Ink Roller for the Sharp ER-A320 Cash Register

Another very hard to find Ink Ribbon is the IR-71 or 805 Ink Ribbon for the Sharp UP-600 Cash Register and a few other Sharp Cash Registers

Remember do not ever re-ink an ink roller or ribbon. Re-inking a cash register ribbon almost always results in the destruction of the cash register. There are a few companies out there that sell re-inked ribbons and rollers. Avoid them at all cost! The real ribbons and rollers are not that expensive that it would warrant buying re-inked ribbons or rollers.

Another important item is the cash register paper. Make sure you keep paper in your cash register even if you don't issue a receipt. Keep the paper in the machine and turn the receipt off. Quite often running a electronic cash register without paper will cause damage to the printer. And lets face facts, if your printer is damaged it is often cheaper to buy a new machine instead of repairing a printer.

Cash Register Theft Prevention

OK for years now we have been advising people to leave their Cash Registers Open when the store is closed! What you ask, are we crazy? Not at all because what we see all the time is a thief breaks in to your store, eyes a cash drawer that is closed and they assume it is just full of cash! So thinking they have hit the jack pot they proceed in destroying your cash register, or just taking the entire thing! And we all know what the idiot thief does not! There is no cash in the drawer, and most often there is a simple switch on the bottom of the drawer that will pop it open. But if thieves thought , well they just would not be thieves would they!

So leave the drawer open and a thief will most likely move along! Even if you are silly enough to leave the drawer full of cash leave it open (unless it can be viewed from outside your store of course). Leaving the drawer open will hopefully at least limit the damage a thief will do!

The ER-A530 Cash Register is a great machine. Features a large flat keyboard, two station receipt and journal printer, large cash drawer, and RS232 Interfaces.

The ER-A530 was designed for the quick service food service restaurant. I do not recommend for a table service restaurant.

Pretty easy to program and the keyboard template is available online. Lots of options available to make the most of the machine like Integrated Credit Card, Integrated Gift Card, Scale, Computer, DVR, Barcode Scanner, Kitchen Printer, and more.

Ink Rollers For the Sharp ER-A320 and ER-A330

The Sharp ER-A320 and ER-A320 Cash Registers both use an IR-90/91 Ink Roller in the printer. Never try to re-ink this roller when it fades. Replace the roller when the print become light. Some busy places use an Ink Roller every two weeks, but most replace the Ink Roller about every month or so.

Most Ink Rollers can be stored for quite a while as long as they are sealed. Just keep them in a cool dark place and they could keep for years in some cases.

Sharp ER-A320 Interfaces

So the Sharp ER-A320 is a great machine. Very Heavy Duty printer and cash drawer. However we get a lot of request to interface this machine do different devices like a computer, coin changer, DVR, liquor dispenser etc. So although it is a great machine it does not interface to anything at all! It is a simple work horse for what it does.

So the problem is Cash Register Dealers carry the commercial line of Sharp Cash Registers not the consumer line of XE models. The Sharp ER-A330 is a great Heavy Duty Cash Register. Very much like the best selling Sharp ER-A320 Cash Register. What the Sharp A330 brings to the table that the A320 did not is that it has clerks and can have a few more department keys. It does come standard with a few more function keys as well.

The Sharp ER-A320 Cash Register is a work horse of a machine. If you need a down and dirty simple machine that will last a long time then this is the one. I understand it is one of the best selling registers on the market. Here are some highlights
